COUNCIL CANDIDATE URGES S.I. RENT REGULATED TENANT TO VOICE
OPINION ABOUT PROPOSED RENT INCREASE : CHIDES TWO OPPONENTS FOR ACCEPTING
CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS FROM LANDLORDS LOBBY
Staten Island, N.Y. - 49th City Council (North
Shore) candidate Debi Rose wrote to Staten Island tenants this week to
urge them to participate in the Rent Guidelines process for determining rent
levels for the next two years.
. . . I urge you to join me in calling upon the Rent
Guidelines Board to vote for a fair and equitable rent amount, Ms. Rose
wrote to rent regulated tenants in the 49th Council District on June
11th. On June 20th the New York City Rent
Guidelines Board, the agency that determines the amount you pay for rent, will
make a decision which will impact the amount that you pay for you apartment in
the future, she continued. Ms. Rose enclosed an informational flyer in
the mailing asking the tenants to [s]end a letter, call or email the Rent
Guidelines Board by June 20th . . . to make sure your voice is
heard, she concluded.
Ms. Rose also chided her two Democratic opponents for
accepting $250 in campaign contributions from the Rent Stabilization
Association, the political action and lobbying organization for the landlords.
Unlike my two opponents in the Democratic primary for the City Council, I
have not accepted monetary contributions from the Rent Stabilization
Association or from other landlords in my campaign. That is because I support
the continuation of rent regulation in the City of New York and the right of
working and middle class New Yorkers to have an affordable place to live,
she wrote.
Last year the Rent Guidelines Board approved increases of 4%
for one-year leases and 6% for two-year leases. This year the Rent Guidelines
Board has proposed a rent increase of 3% and 5%, respectively, and held a
public hearing on the June 13th. A final vote is expected at the
Boards hearing on June 20th.
