Issues

Campaign Financing

  • Campaign reforms should emphasize small individual contributions and public financing of campaigns.
  • Public office should not be bought, it should be earned.

Economic Development

  • We support the setting up of incubators for the generation of new small businesses on the North Shore.
  • Cultivate industrial parks which will bring more jobs (all levels -- blue and white collar)

Education

  • Across the public school system, students, teachers, and administrators must meet higher standards.
  • We need more classrooms and full-service school facilities to relieve overcrowding on the North Shore.
  • Class sizes must be reduced.
  • Schools must provide the state-mandated services to meet academic needs of students in need.
  • We must be committed to bringing new technologies into the classroom.
  • We must insure every public school on Staten Island has an up-to-date library with a licensed librarian.
  • To insure all children reach high standards, we support A.M. latchkey, after school and summer programs.
  • Supervisory appointments must be based on true merit, not patronage.
  • School vouchers or tax credits distract us from our mission to improve public education.
  • Where needed, we support remediation programs in the City University system.

Environment

  • Recycling efforts must be multiplied to reduce NY trash.
  • Dumping dredged toxic material in NY/NJ harbor is unacceptable.
  • We must preserve and expand the North Shore greenbelt.
  • The North Shore waterfront should be developed for recreational purposes.
  • We oppose the incursion of the Howland Hook container port on our limited wetland resources.
  • We support efforts to reduce and eliminate airline noise.

Gun Control

  • We advocate for stiff, national gun control standards.
  • Gun manufacturers should be held accountable for the distribution and sale of their product.

Health

  • All residents should have access to affordable health care.
  • Preventive and early detection health programs should target asthma, lung cancer, heart disease, AIDS, breast cancer, etc.

Housing and Preservation

  • City Planning should use its staff and budgetary resources to act on community requests to down-zone residential areas, instead of burdening the communities themselves with this work. Down-zoning will help preserve the older, established North Shore communities by preventing the building higher density housing.
  • We should support the creation of historic districts in Stapleton, Snug Harbor East, Mariners Harbor, and other neighborhoods with irreplaceable housing stock.
  • Redlining of North Shore neighborhoods by financial lending institutions must be exposed whenever and wherever it occurs.
  • We must maintain our commitment to providing public housing; privatization of public housing must be opposed.

Public Safety

  • We are committed to community policing and better training for police officers.
  • We support upgrading of street lights and adequate E.M.S. coverage for all communities.

Seniors

  • It is time to build a senior citizen center in the Clifton-Concord community.
  • It is time to redress the lack of delivery of services to seniors in public housing on the North Shore.

Transportation

  • The Staten Island Ferry service must be monitored closely and improved.
  • We must promote public transportation, including North Shore rail line.

Youth

  • The Field of Dreams should be secured for use by the North Shore community.
  • Funding must be secured and maintained for preventative programs that engage North Shore youth in every community.

Welfare Reform

  • Training opportunities and job creation for WEP workers must be expanded, including public-private partnerships.
  • Outreach efforts are needed to see that all those eligible for federal entitlements, such as food stamps, receive them.

Women’s Issues

  • A womans right to reproductive choice must be protected.
